LGIFR Fire Chief Update
July 2010

This update covers many areas and each are important components of our system. Each topic was placed in alphabetical order to allow for ease of locating topics but more importantly not to imply any one item is more important than another based on the order of the topics.

            Calls for Service

All calls for service are being documented and processed for NFIRS reporting. In July LGIFR responded to:

Medical- - (1) unconscious (1) altered mental status (1) weakness (2) trauma

Fire- (1) alarm (3) brush (1)search and rescue (1)service calls (2)tree fires

            EMS Capabilities

LGIFR remains at a First Response level. LGIFR is proceeding thru the approval process to be an Advanced Life Support provider. We received the new cardiac monitor this week. LGIFR has retained Dr. Dan O’Leary as our Medical Director. This is a requirement for the application to provide Advanced Life Support. There will be a public hearing in August during the Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners meeting to discuss the Advanced Life Support Application for LGIFR. The final hearing is set for mid September. Times for both meetings are TBD. LGIFR is on track to be providing ALS by the beginning of October.           

            EMS Training

A First Responder medical program will be completing it’s first class at the end of August and will begin a second class in September.  Individual CPR, AED, and first aid classes are available to any islander seeking the training. Contact LGIFR for dates available.

            Fire Training

LGIFR has completed the first fire training class and has several set up for the next few months. Mutual aid fire departments will be involved in the training to improve overall response of LGIFR and improve the working relationships of each agency. Englewood Fire Rescue has completed the orientation on the island. Boca Grande Fire Department crews will be on the island during the month of August and Charlotte County is still to be determined.

            Fire/EMS Response

LGIFR has maintained we are an organization dedicated to mitigating Fire/EMS incidents to the best of our abilities within our capabilities.  Residents wishing to notify the Department of non-emergent incidents or information are urged to do so by calling the non-emergent number at (941)270-7607. We are staffed 24/7 and are here for the citizens of the island. If you need help or have a question please do not hesitate call. 

            Firefighting Equipment

LGIFR has purchased the equipment requested and approved by the Board of Directors in June. Many items are on backorder and we be delivered as soon as they arrive at the

factory. LGIFR has received several equipment donations which include TFT nozzles, two smoke ventilations fans, six survivair air packs, various sized face masks and

thirteen air bottles. The air packs and air bottles meet State/Federal guidelines for safety.

            First Aid

LGIFR offers first aid at Station 1 located on LGI at 9540 Jolly Roger Trl or at your location. When in doubt do not move the injured person and call 911.    

            Free Blood Pressure Screening

LGIFR offers blood pressure screening at Station 1 located on LGI at 9540 Jolly Roger Trl. We recommend calling first to ensure we are at the station but we do handle walk ups.

            Insurance Rating Update

LGIFR is continuing thru the pre-survey packet. The packet requires some testing of equipment on back order. Once the equipment arrives the packet will be submitted to ISO.  The survey establishes our ability to be surveyed for an insurance class rating.

            NIMS Compliance

National Incident Management System(NIMS) compliance is required for recipients of grant funds. NIMS training will be offered with the fire classes to address the requirements of NIMS compliance for the Safer Grant.       

            Part Time Personnel

LGIFR has three new Paramedic Firefighters to the part time firefighter roster. Eric Depew, Danette D’Angelo and Peter Reilly. All new employees have a wealth of knowledge and  experience.

            Vehicle Designations

LGIFR Squad 1- Triton with water and medical capabilities located at Station 1

LGIFR Rescue 1- cart currently out of service being updated by Charlotte County

LGIFR Engine 1-mini pumper located Station 1

LGIFR Tender 1- 800 gallon water tender located at Station 2

LGIFR Utility 1- four wheel drive vehicle with large diameter hose located at Station 1

            Vehicle Status

LGIFR Squad 1, Engine 1, Tender 1, Utility 1 are all inservice and operational. Squad 1 had the windshield replaced during July and LGIFR would like to thank Eldred’s Marina for their assistance in transporting the vehicle to and from the island. The EMS Cart is scheduled to be on the island in the next few weeks per Chief Didio.  

            Vehicle Storage

The vehicles are stored at either LGIFR Station 1 or LGIFR Station 2.  Long term We are in need of a facility with a secured bay to increase the life expectancy of the vehicles.

            EMS Capabilities

LGIFR remains at a First Response level. We have received permission from Charlotte County and the State of Florida to apply for an Advanced Life Support license. The process requires two applications and two inspections. With LGIFR Board approval we could begin the process as soon as possible.

            Fundraising

LGIFR will have an apparel sale July 3, 2010 in front of Hideaway. The times will be from 12pm-6pm. LGIFR will be participating in the fourth of July parade with one apparatus.

LGIFR has added Damon Williams as a part time firefighter/EMT. Damon is a LT/EMT with Boca Grande Fire Rescue. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience and is a welcomed addition to the LGIFR Team.
